The Sheehy and Mennis families -- a request for information PDF Print E-mail

We received this request via the site's submit story link -- if anyone has any information that can help John in his quest please drop us a line via the contact form and we will forward it on to him. [CJ]

In 1903 my grandparents were married. My grandfather's name was Maurice Sheehy and he lived in the farm at Glounbrack where Jerome and Noreen Sheehy now live. My grandmother was Catherine Mennis. Before she married she lived at Froe, on the farm which the O'Neill family now own.

Over the next 10 years a number of children were born including my mother, Mary. However, during the same time the farm and family gradually slid into a position which resulted in the farm having to be sold.

Most of what happened in the 10 years from 1914 to 1924 is, so far, a puzzle. The only certainties are that, soon after moving from Glounbrack, Catherine [Mennis] Sheehy died  [when she was probably in her early 40s] and the children went to live with relatives. It seems likely that Maurice Sheehy moved, first, to Maulathanavally, and, later, to Maulyregan. Whether he went on his own, or not, is not clear.

At the moment I am trying to piece together the story of this family. The years from 1914 to 1924 are the biggest problem, but within this decade what exactly happened to Catherine [Mennis] Sheehy is a mystery. There seems to be no trace of her today - no headstone, no photographs, not even a memory.

If anybody knows anything about this family, no matter how insignificant it may seem, then I would love to hear about it. A photograph of any of the family would be wonderful.
