NEIL O’Gorman, Castleventry, won the Reenascreena novice B tournament final on Saturday last.
Just five metres separated him from gallant runner-up, Declan White, Clonakilty, at the end of an exciting thirteen shot battle on the Tullig road.
It was a triumph for O’Gorman’s determination and perseverance as he overhauled White’s big early lead before closing the score with two brilliant shots the last of which rolled past White’s formidable mark. The early stages belonged to White. Brilliantly executed second and third shots had him a bowl up and his fourth through the ‘four crosse’ had him seventy metres with that.
O’Gorman lined a superb seventh to the ‘bungalow’ and it would prove vital to the outcome. White slipped throwing his fifth and crossed his sixth to the right with the result that his margin was cut to sixty metres. The Clon man continued to play well but O’Gorman gradually reduced the lead with good responses leaving just twenty metres in it at the ‘cual boreen’.
A well tracked second last past McCarthy’s left O’Gorman in front for only the second time as the finish line loomed. White responded in the best way he could whipping a terrific last shot along the right. Calling on years of experience O’Gorman won the day with an impecably delivered reply that was accurate and smooth on the rough surface.
His reward was the silver cup, kindly sponsored by John Joe and Helen O’Driscoll, and €600 cash prize. Declan White’s runner-up spot from thirty-two entrants earned him a glass decanter and €300 while semi-finalists, David Cotter and Finbarr Coughlan, were also in the money from the €1,500 total prizefund.

RCAG has been working with Coillte Teoranta for the last number of years to develop a public amenity walkway to the summit of Carrigfadda hill. This long and protracted process is finally coming to fruition, and the first stage of the project -- laying out the path itself -- is complete.
While there are some issues to iron out relating to the gradient of the opening section of the walk, and Coillte access when it comes time for them to harvest the timber growing on the hillside, this is an incredibly positive step in the evolution of a valuable and long sought community resource.
It's still a far cry from the original proposal, and items like signage, seating, native tree planting and more are still under discussion. Stay tuned for more updates and photographs soon. Meanwhile, if you'd like to take a look, why not head on to Carrigfadda for a peek, and let us have your feedback -- we need your input to negotiate with Coillte to make sure the walk is the best it can be for everybody.

Reenascreena Community Playgroup is delighted to announce that "Anyone can rob a bank", the hilarious comedy by Tom Coffey, will be coming to the stage in Reenascreena Community Hall on Friday 29th February.
Ahakera Drama Group will be staging the production. Admission will be €10 on the door, and all proceeds from the night will go towards funding the community playgroup.
A three-act comedy, "Anyone Can
Rob A Bank" has been described as good, clean family fun; a lightweight caper
with strong elements of farce, and should certainly prove entertaining for all.
Come along and enjoy the show, take part in the raffle and partake of the refreshments on offer. It's guaranteed to be a great night... and it's for a great local cause.
We'll see you there....
