A beautiful day in Reenascreena


It was a beautiful day in Reenascreena on Sunday 20th of June as bands from around the area gathered for the final event of the Reenascreena Midsummer Extravaganza. Local youngsters kicked off the Music Marathon at about 4:30pm with a varied programme delivering everything from heavy rock to traditional Irish ballads.

Reenascreena school pupils set the scene for an evening of cultural entertainment in the village on Saturday 19th June. Pupils read from a selection of their own work about Reenascreena and the surrounding area, some of which has been selected for publication in a new book of children's poetry. Look out for samples of the children's work on this website soon. The poetry recitals were followed by the wonderful sounds of the Irish Harp played superbly by talented young musician Amanda Coakley.

Under starters' orders
The tension was palpable as the six thoroughbred racers were coaxed expertly into the starting gates. Whiskers quiverring in anticipation they waited for the off. Commentator Kenneth Murphy ran through the runners and owners one last time, there was a flurry of late activity at the bookies' table and they were off. "Rodent's Revenge" was first out of the gate, but "Furry Mickey" was closing fast. It was neck and neck. Then, out of nowhere "Where's The Cat?" made a sudden surge for the line!

Young and old alike flocked to Reenascreena on Thursday evening, 17th June, for a guided walk to mark the start of the Reenascreena Midsummer Extravaganza. The five-mile-plus walk, led by local historian Fachtna O'Callaghan, started at the steeple in Reenascreena village, proceeded to Carrigfadda Church, then on to the William Thompson monument outside The Mall School before returning to the village along "The Straight Road".
